But how can you make the right decisions for the future when all of your experiences are based on the past?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make future proof decisions it is important to know what\u2019s going on in your business, in the consumers\u2019 head and in society as a whole. One of the methods you can use to map out the future is <\/span><b>trendwatching<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you\u2019re probably thinking: \u201c<em>Trendwatching, isn\u2019t that the kind of thing young and trendy people do to figure out what\u2019s in fashion next season? What can this possibly do for my business?<\/em>\u201d Well, let\u2019s start with the fact that you\u2019re not the only one with that (incorrect) image of trendwatching. You\u2019re also not the only one who, as a result of this, misses opportunities to innovate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Trends<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me start by clarifying what exactly a \u2018trend\u2019 is. A trend goes way beyond the fashion industry. As a matter of fact, the trends I am talking about have virtually nothing to do with fashion. The trends I\u2019m talking about are shifts you can use as substantiation and inspiration for your innovation process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be able to make optimal use of trends in order to create more valuable innovations, it is important to distinguish three different trend levels:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Microtrends<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microtrends are also known as \u2018market trends\u2019. These are clusters of \u2018signals\u2019 which consists of \u2018tangible\u2019 developments, such as new products and services. Microtrends have a duration, on average, of 1 to 5 years. For example, initiatives such as <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/toogoodtogo.co.uk\/en-gb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Good To Go<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hatrabbits.com\/en\/csr-done-right-13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Inglorious fruits and vegetables<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forgottenfruit.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forgotten fruit<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These signals have something in common: they all offer a solution against food waste. That\u2019s why they together form a Microtrend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Macrotrends<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macrotrends are also called \u2018consumer trends\u2019. Unlike Microtrends, Macrotrends are not tangible. They are changing (latent) needs of the consumer, like insights, norms and values. These trends can last 5 to 10 years and are the foundation on which Microtrends are built. The initiatives against food waste (the Microtrend discussed above) originated from a growing awareness, the need to waste less food and to do something <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hatrabbits.com\/en\/csr-done-right-33\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Megatrends<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And last, but not least; Megatrends. These are major societal trends. Where Micro- and Macrotrends are relatively small and manageable, Megatrends are large and complex shifts. Fortunately, this doesn\u2019t mean that they are very difficult to identify. Megatrends can be substantiated from research, data and statistics. They have a major impact on our society and can last up to 10 to 50 years. For example, shifts like urbanization, globalization, ageing and sustainability are all megatrends. And \u2018sustainability\u2019 happens to be one of the Megatrends from which the above-mentioned initiatives against food waste originated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exploring the future (or trendwatching) is, in short, signalling changes to make strategic choices for the future.
