\u2028\u2028Last week we organised a ThinkTank for the municipality of Rotterdam. As always we used a lot of different techniques. Today I\u2019d like to share one of these techniques. A true classic called SCAMPER.<\/em><\/p>\n

SCAMPER is a simple creative checklist, invented by the American author Bob Eberle. He created a mnemonic based on the work of brainstorm guru Alex Osborn. SCAMPER is an acronym for seven thinking techniques, it stands for:<\/p>\n

S = Substitute
\nC = Combine
\nA = Adapt
\nM = Modify (or Magnify)
\nP = Put to Other Uses
\nE = Eliminate
\nR = Rearrange (or Reverse)<\/p>\n

The techniques descend from the idea that asking questions will provide you with a lot of insights. Questions force us to think and formulate answers. Creative questions are a fun and easy way to explore a subject creatively.<\/p>\n

Scamper can best be applied on an existing product or service.<\/p>\n

Every technique represents another way to look at your challenge. With every technique you can ask a different set of questions that will most certainly lead to very different ideas. I advice you to make your own list of questions that fit your type of challenge best. To get you started I’ve included some example questions below.<\/p>\n

Substitute<\/strong>
\nCan I use an alternative?
\nCan I change parts?
\nCan I use different materials?
\nCan I use another technique?
\nCan I change its name, colour, sound, shape, smell?
\nCan I use a different structure?
\nCan I use other ideas or resources?
\nCan I replace components?
\nCan I substitute rules, ideas or people?<\/p>\n

Combine<\/strong>
\nCan I combine my challenge with something else?
\nCan I combine elements of my challenge?
\nCan I combine objectives?
\nCan I merge parts or ideas?
\nCan I combine products to create something new?<\/p>\n

Adapt<\/strong>
\nWhat else is like my product?
\nWhat can I copy, borrow or steal?
\nWhat ideas could I incorporate?
\nWhat is similar to my challenge?
\nWhat other process can I adapt?<\/p>\n

Modify<\/strong>
\nCan I magnify it?
\nCan I make it huge?
\nCan I minimise it?
\nCan I make it tiny?
\nCan I increase its frequency?
\nCan I make it lighter, heavier, stronger or faster?
\nCan I change its shape, its colour or its smell?
\nCan I make it faster or bolder?
\nCan I add extra features?
\nCan I multiply it?<\/p>\n

Put to Other Uses<\/strong>
\nIn what other ways can I use my product?
\nWhat are other reasons to use my product?
\nCan I use something from another industry?
\nIn what ways can I recycle my waste?
\nWho else could use this product?<\/p>\n

Eliminate <\/strong>
\nCan I erase elements of my challenge?
\nCan I delete a part of the process?
\nWhat rules can I remove?
\nCan I remove something crucial?
\nHow can I simplify my product or process?
\nWhat is non-essential? Can I remove this?
\nCan I make it smaller or more compact?<\/p>\n

Rearrange (or Reverse)<\/strong>
\nCan I reverse the order?
\nCan I switch parts of the process?
\nCan I change the sequence?
\nCan I do the opposite?
\nCan I work backwards?
\nCan I interchange components?<\/p>\n

As you can imagine this list is just to get you started. Explore each technique and create a list of your own. Have some fun in the process and you will see that this checklist will definitely get you thinking.<\/p>\n
