How silly questions can get us in a creative mindset<\/h3>\n

“What if…” questions are generally asked\u00a0by ‘yes-but’ people. “Yes, great idea, but what if our customers\u00a0don’t like\u00a0it?”<\/p>\n

The same question, however, is also rather useful to creative people. Answering this very question regularly leads to groundbreaking new ideas and\u00a0fresh insights.<\/p>\n

“What if…” make us think. It\u00a0helps us to escape our day-to-day business and\u00a0shows us what\u00a0the future could look like.<\/p>\n

“What if…” questions are often the starting point of some very original ideas.<\/p>\n

Consider the following.\u00a0 What would the world look like if the following scenarios would be reality?<\/p>\n

What if… pigs could fly?<\/em>
\nWhat if… children would be\u00a0invisible?<\/em>
\nWhat if…\u00a0corporations would be run by grandmothers?<\/em>
\nWhat if… people would only eat carrots?<\/em>
\nWhat if…\u00a0everybody would be a spy?<\/em>
\nWhat if… cars would\u00a0run on compliments?<\/em><\/p>\n

If you just think about one of these scenarios for a second you probably already see a vivid image of the situation in front of you.
\n(In the case of flying piggies, you might envision butchers\u00a0with jetpacks, farmers\u00a0wearing safety\u00a0helmets protecting themselves against falling poo, etc.)<\/p>\n

One of the reasons why the “what if…” questions are so powerful is because they get us out of our current situation and\u00a0show us a world where everything is possible. They open doors to our imagination<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Asking “what if…” questions is a great exercise\u00a0if you want to train your creative muscle. Just take a few minutes\u00a0out of your busy schedule and think about the possibilities of your “what if…” scenario. Just let the film play inside your mind’s eye\u00a0and imagine what it would look like.<\/p>\n

This fun and\u00a0harmless little exercise helps you to think about things you normally would not think about.\u00a0It\u00a0might even spark an idea or two for your business.<\/p>\n

Needless to say, these imaginative\u00a0questions\u00a0can also be used as a warming up<\/a> for one of your brainstorm sessions, to get the participants in the right mood.<\/p>\n

Give it a\u00a0try and come up with a few “what if…” scenarios yourself.<\/p>\n

It goes without saying that “what if…” questions can also be applied to your own business.\u00a0We’re almost always\u00a0so caught up by\u00a0what is,\u00a0that we often\u00a0forget to think about what can be. The\u00a0“what if…” technique\u00a0is a great way to force yourself to\u00a0do otherwise.<\/p>\n

What if… our services were free of charge?<\/em>
\nWhat if… we would stop selling our best selling product?<\/em>
\nWhat if… our service\u00a0would cost one million dollars?<\/em>
\nWhat if… we started selling our waste?<\/em>
\nWhat if… our market would evaporate next year?<\/em>
\nWhat if… we would buy our biggest competitor?<\/em>
\nWhat if…\u00a0we would create\u00a0a new product\u00a0for a different market?<\/em><\/p>\n

Develop several\u00a0“what if…” scenarios for your own organisation\u00a0and see what it leads you to.\u00a0It could\u00a0help you to come up with some new products or services and it might even\u00a0lead to a pivot in your business model<\/a><\/span>…<\/p>\n

When answering your “what if…” question, try to look at this hypothetical situation from all angles. Consider both the upsides and the downsides and pay attention to the questions it raises. Creativity guru Edward de Bono developed a clever thinking tool for this; PMI<\/a>.<\/p>\n
