\u201cScience fiction is any idea that occurs in the head and doesn\u2019t exist yet, but soon will.\u201d \u2013 Ray Bradbury<\/em><\/p>\n

While science fiction initially is exactly that \u2013fiction- it doesn\u2019t have to stay that way. In fact, much of the technology we use today was described in a sci-fi novel or film long before it turned reality.<\/p>\n

The Hitchhiker\u2019s Guide to the Galaxy was first published in 1979, but seems to clearly describe an alien tablet pc<\/strong>. Main character Arthur Dent is faced with an electronic book. A book with a screen that allows you to type in any subject you\u2019re interested in. Not only does the information appear on the screen, the book also speaks. In Star Trek, Captain Picard is shown looking at a similar device. Decennia before the successful launch of the Ipad, science fiction writers already saw the potential.<\/p>\n

Science fiction is the perfect source of inspiration. It features products, services and systems that are not reality yet, but would (in most cases) definitely make our lives more pleasant.<\/p>\n

Look closely at \u2013especially old- science fiction. The technology in these books and films may have looked far fetched at the time, but chances are the products described could actually be built today. Submarines and helicopters appeared in books and sketches centuries before anyone was even close to building one that worked! Jules Verne described how astronauts travelled to the moon in a rocket\u2026 more than 100 years before Neil Armstrong set foot on the rocky surface. The things are not necessarily inventions that need huge government budgets though\u2026<\/p>\n

Think about mobile phones (inspired by Star Trek), the pocket calculator, or more recently the Oculus Rift, a device that makes the idea of \u2018The Matrix\u2019 more and more plausible\u2026 Palmer Lucky was only a teenager when he started working on the revolutionary device. He was looking for a gaming experience not unlike the one seen in The Matrix; \u2018where I can plug in and actually be in the game.\u2019 Tinkering in his parents\u2019 garage led him to a billion dollar invention\u2026<\/p>\n

Sooner or later, almost any fantasy product turns reality. Let science fiction ideas inspire you to come up with new inventions\u2026 or simply \u2018steal\u2019 an old fantasy and make it real.<\/p>\n
