Did you ever experience a brainstorm session that got\u00a0stuck in a discussion? Clashes between creative and critical people happen all the time. Fortunately there is an easy way\u00a0to prevent this.\u00a0Funny enough the\u00a0solution comes from the The Walt Disney Studios.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Disney Method<\/h1>\n

For over 90 years Disney has been creating some of the most wonderful icons\u00a0in the history of entertainment.\u00a0The company itself is almost as remarkable as its characters. One of the\u00a0reasons why Walt Disney became so successful, is because he was able to switch smoothly between the endless imagination of a blue sky\u00a0dreamer and the interesting\u00a0findings of a\u00a0tough critic.<\/p>\n

Disney and\u00a0his team used\u00a03 different roles to explore a project thoroughly; the dreamer, the realist and the critic. Each of the roles represents a different angle to look at a\u00a0project.<\/p>\n

By adapting only one of these\u00a0roles at a time,\u00a0the team could focus and discuss the project from the same perspective. This approach was later studied and described by NLP guru\u00a0Robert Dilts<\/em> as the ‘Disney Method’.<\/p>\n

You can apply the Disney Method in several ways. Important is that all participants take on the same role. <\/span>You can use 3 separate rooms, or you can appoint 3 corners of a room for each role. If you don\u2019t have a large room, you can choose to exit and re-enter the room. This will often be enough for people to adopt a new role (and different mood).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n


\n1) The Dreamer<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the first ‘room’ everything is possible. The sky is the limit. Everybody\u00a0should use their imagination and come up with crazy new ideas. Pure divergent thinking without any judgement.<\/p>\n

2) The Realist<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the second ‘room’ we think about how to turn\u00a0those wild ideas into feasible\u00a0plans. It’s about being pragmatic. In this room we\u00a0apply\u00a0convergent thinking and\u00a0pick the best ideas. After the evaluation (based on some criteria) we\u00a0create the plan to realise these ideas. We\u00a0think about what needs to be done to make the ideas come true.<\/p>\n

3) The Critic<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the last ‘room’ we take on the role of the devil’s advocate\u00a0to find out if\u00a0\u00a0anything is missing or needed. What are the dangers? The risks? The obstacles?\u00a0The pitfalls? What could go wrong? etc.<\/p>\n

Critics are not negative; they\u00a0are\u00a0constructive. Judge the ideas.\u00a0Edit, improve and\u00a0reject ideas.<\/p>\n

All comments made in this room should be turned into questions for the Dreamers.\u00a0After you have judged everything,\u00a0it’s time to start the cycle all over again. Keep doing this until\u00a0you are satisfied with your results.<\/p>\n

The Disney Method\u00a0is comparable with Edward de Bono\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0 ‘Six Thinking Hats<\/a>‘. The only difference is that the Disney method has a particular sequence while the Six Hats can be applied in a random order as long as everybody is thinking in the same role.<\/p>\n

Use the different roles (whether it’s by applying the Disney Method or the Six Thinking Hats) to improve collaboration. Avoid unproductive disputes and generate great new ideas together.<\/p>\n
